Brando in “Streetcar…” Oh, please…no

23 Jan

He always appears in these “hottest people in the world” lists. I taught “Streetcar…” for years and even if my students gasped when he first came on screen, if they didn’t find Stanley Kowalski to be a thoroughly revolting human being by the end — violent, insecure, ignorant, a pig — I would consider my job undone. And I always find the facile celebrating of his personage and “sexiness” to be mildly disgusting.

But, hey, if that works for you…

I find the fact that you insinuate to your readers that you deeply understand Streetcar when I’ve *proven* on your Twitter post that you unquestionably do not to be mildly disgusting. I find your insinuation that my understanding of Streetcar as an example of a play/film that purposefully presents a sexy male figure shows that abusive men are my type morally repulsive. I find your silence on my many examples of the ways in which you misunderstand Streetcar to be telling. At least Stanley Kowlaski doesn’t pretend to be a nice guy when he is actually a fake intellectual who can write quips about a person he doesn’t know and a play he doesn’t understand in the hopes that barbed language will get his blog a little attention. Inauthenticity is repugnant.

Sorry that’s how you feel. That wasn’t meant to target you, specifically.

“when I’ve *proven* on your Twitter post that you unquestionably do not to be mildly disgusting.” Where was that tweet, don’t remember

And only looked at my comments section for the first time in years. Sorry again. Unfortunately, the take that *most* people have of Stanley is that he’s hot, and then *choose* to not believe it like Eunice tells Stella to.
