Romans —“Romaioi” or “Romioi” — was our most common term of self-designation and endonym from the 3rd century A.D., more or less, until my grandparents’ generation in the early 20th century. The exonym “Greeks” is what the West has called us since the Romans and still calls us and is fine with me. The new “Hellenes” is another sad pandering, an embarrassing, nationalist, neologism. And a lie.
