They’re particularly moving because many of them seem “late” — I mean like in the 60s and 70s — when the community had shrunk down to about 50 or 60K, yet seemed to still be brimming with life and urban gusto on all levels, even after 40 and 50 years of incessant harassment and persecution.

I'm Greek (Roman really, but when I say that in English some five people in the world today understand what I'm talking about, so I use "Greek" for shorthand). I'm from New York.
